PARIS PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH ANNOUNCEMENTS 5-24-2020

Following the regulations issued by the state of Illinois, all worship services and other activities at the church are cancelled through May 30.  While it looks like our region of the state will move on to “Phase 3” of re-opening at that point, gatherings of more than ten people, like the usual form of our Sunday worship services, are not permitted until “Phase 4”. 

            Our weekly worship services consisting of Call to Worship, Scripture readings, sermon, and prayer are videos on the church Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/199348923523091/ It is an open page, so anyone with internet can visit, not just those with their own Facebook accounts.

           During this time of Stay at Home regulations, our Treasurer is able to pick up the mail at the church a couple times a week.  We ask that those of you who are in a position to keep up with your intended giving please consider doing so, by mailing your contribution to the church (241 W. Court St., Paris).

         For quite a few years now, we have held a “Spring Fling” Sunday in May, when our worship service is followed by an outdoor picnic, and a group flower planting and landscaping time, on the church grounds.  This year we were unable to do that.  Many thanks to Jani Howrey, Dale Thomas, and Tom Hebermehl, who took care of the flower planting part this week (at an appropriate social distance from one another, of course).  You can see the results of their work across the front of the church.

 

 

Sunday May 31 is the Day of Pentecost on the Christian calendar, fifty days after Easter.  This is the day the Holy Spirit came to Jesus’ disciples, inspiring them to tell the many people gathered in Jerusalem about Jesus.  Many of them believed in him and were baptized that day, resulting in the formation of the first Christian church.  As a result, this day is sometimes called the “birthday of the church”.   This story will be featured in our online worship service for May 31; if you would like to “read ahead”, turn to Acts 2:1-41.  Pentecost is one of the days we celebrate the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper in our congregation, and you are also invited to have a little bread and juice or wine with you as you view the service, as the Lord’s Supper will also be part of the service.
